We have not been able to reproduce this issue but there is a chance these issues are related so check again after tomorrow's downtime. If there is no improvement we will of course keep investigating. |

O'ralia wrote:CCP Snorlax wrote:We are still not able to repro this problem inhouse, but we are still investigating. Are you sure you are trying it on a mac? I was working fine until 2 days ago and now I can't log in on my mac. I've already lost training time as I wasn't able to add a skill to the plan. I find it a bit hard to believe that there are so many mac users on here that are having the same black screen issue and you can't 'reproduce the problem.' I appreciate that this is frustrating, but the fact is that this is not happening on all Macs - see https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=4195477#post4195477 for example. We would also have noticed if there was a significant drop in logins from Macs. This makes it harder for us to track down, but we are still working on it. |

Getting logs from the startup of the client might help - see https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Mac_bug_reporting for details on getting logging from the Mac client.
Please file bug reports with the logs, and details on your system and exact symptoms. |

...
I would very much like to know if my computer becomes officially unsupported by CCP as soon as possible. I really do not want to buy a new computer but I will if y'all officially give up on solving this problem and that's what it takes. Is there any other way I can update my training queue other than installing EVE on a computer that works? The GeForce 9400m is technically below our minspec (see http://www.eveonline.com/faq/client-system-requirements/) so it might be time to get a new computer.
We haven't given up on this yet, but so far we've been unable to repro this issue and we no longer have working Macs that fit your specs. The only changes to low level graphics code in Rubicon 1.1 have been to address crashes (or work around driver crashes) so we can't simply revert those - we have to find solutions that work on all the different configs out there.

Call Rollard wrote:And for CCP saying our problems are below supported system requirements the 320m is having problems as well, 320m isn't below supported system requirements, it meets it. Well at least we have other games we can play until it's resolved... That's not what I said - the 9400m is below minspec, that's all I was pointing out. As soon as we get some sort of repro inhouse we can start trying out some fixes - we are still working on this.

Yulia Yotosala wrote:Coming here as every day since 4 February I have struggled to enter Eve Online. The character selection screen is blank and the dock is flickering. If i leave Eve open and go to a firefox screen that flickers. I can enter the game if I can click on the correct bit of a totally black screen, but I'm having to run windowed with my bottom modules hidden if I do get in and it's hard work. I cannot fathom the mac client logging. There's nothing I can see in the launcher log. Looking at my mac's logs I am getting a lot of Nvidia errors, many times a second: 08/02/2014 10:51:50.000 kernel[0]: NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! exception type = 0xd = GR: SW Notify Error This is an example of the graphics problems I have had http://imgur.com/8Yp0YYaI'm running on a 2009 pre-recession 13 inch macbook pro with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M. It worked (except station environment) until Tuesday :( This indicates that the Nvidia driver is in a bad state, whether that is a genuine driver bug or our code is somehow corrupting something in the driver. Generally application code should not be able to this sort of exception - the driver should handle things gracefully even if the app is doing something wrong, and simply return appropriate error codes.
The only changes in low level graphics code in recent patches were to address similar issues in drivers we'd seen under Windows. Often those kinds of fixes simply involve doing things differently - sometimes the old code is perfectly valid (and runs fine on other hardware, with a different driver).
We have a couple of ideas of things we could change that might affect this issue, but the risk is that some of the issues we were trying to fix rear their ugly heads again so we need to test those changes carefully. I'd also really prefer to see a repro case inhouse that we can then use to verify that those changes indeed fix the issue. So far we've been unsuccessful with that - none of the Macs we have exhibit any of those symptoms. Admittedly we do not have one with the 9400m card, but the issue has been reported on the 320m. We do have such a Mac, and the character selection screen shows up fine there (as well as all the other Macs).
There must be more factors involved that we haven't worked out yet - this is too consistent to be random, but it's not just the graphics card. We'll keep digging until we find something. When we do, I'm pretty sure the issue will be fixed on the 9400m as well as the newer cards.

We have not had any luck in reproing this, but we have a patch going out tomorrow where we have at least an attempted fix.
I've gone through all changes to the graphics engine that went out in the patch that seems to have triggered the black screen on character select, and we're basically reverting those changes when running on a Mac. We're grasping at straws here, but I feel we have to try something.

I know, this doesn't make any sense at all, which is why this is proving so difficult to fix. There were really no relevant changes that triggered this. We'll see how things are after today's patch, and I'll keep monitoring bug reports and the forums for info from you guys.

I'm hoping to get the build out on a test server today so we can at least see if the code change helps - check back later for details.

I was really hoping to be able to play today. :-( Please file a bug report with as much detail as possible - if you use the ingame bug reporting right after the freeze the logs there might us useful info. Now that the black screen on startup is fixed, we can start looking into other issues.

We have found a probable cause for the crash happening around the Gallente station, we'll get a patch out as soon as we can.

We couldn't repro the crash inhouse so we couldn't confirm. We did find a bug, an invalid draw call that on most machines would simply not render the lights on a station for the first frame but seemed to cause the crash on some Mac setups. It's probably a combination of certain hardware and OS (or rather driver) versions.
Anyway, hopefully this issue is fixed now!

I froze within 15 minutes of undocking and was in an asteroid belt. The fix was specifically for the case where a specific Gallente station was in view. There must be another root cause for the crash you are experiencing - we'll have to keep at it.
